Meet the #FAM: Michael & Andrea Shaffer
MEET THE #FAM: Michael and Andrea Shaffer @4wlnmom and @nevada4wheelin
The Shaffer’s are the quintessential outdoor family of five living by the motto, "We are a family of dirt junkies who can't get enough wheeling and camping!" From adventures in the Red Rocks of Southern Utah to Colorado's Rocky Mountains to participating in the 10-day all-female off-road auto navigation @rebellerally in Lake Tahoe, CA, being outside as much as possible is the only way to live!
During the summer, Andrea (@4wlnmomand) and Michael (@nevada4wheelin) spent a week a half with their kids exploring the beautiful countryside of Colorado in their third generation 4Runner outfitted with the Pioneer Shasta, along with several other overlanding friends. A memorable trip full of adventures the family never wanted to end! It included cool weather and stunning colorful sunsets, rugged, challenging off-road trails like the Holy Cross, Chinaman's Gulch, and "The Wall" at Poughkeepsie Gulch, putting those new 35s to good use. Plus, exploring abandoned mines in the mountainside, celebrating Andrea's birthday with whitewater as a backdrop, and surprising their kids with a train ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Then visiting the depot and history museum to learn about the early days of transportation, the railroad, and mining in the Rocky Mountains.
A family affair was the October Rebelle Rally! For the second time, Michael volunteered, and Andrea competed for the third time as a navigator, and second time competing with @fj_anna. The team finished in the top 10 and won the skills challenge, while the grandparents watched the kids! Another motto that fits the Schaffer’s is "friends and family that overland together stay together." Michael sums it up pretty well, "It's a ton of work, but a ton of fun too, and so extremely rewarding just being a small part of it. The women that compete are some of the strongest, most driven people I've ever met. They encourage each other, help each other, feed each other, dig each other out of the sand, and they all make it back. Being around these women is honestly inspirational. It's an honor to work with these people, this family, and I can't wait for next year!"
