Simply stated a roof top tent (RTT) is a tent that mounts to a roof/roof rack and opens up for use at night keeping people in both safety and comfort above the ground. The concept came about in 1930’s Europe and had since grown to be a world wide phenomenon.

Today, roof top tents are available from literally 100 or more companies and made in Europe, South Africa, Australia, China, Taiwan, Korea the USA and other countries. They range in size from the smallest that is big enough for two adults to the largest that has room for five. For the most part they share similar designs but the quality of materials and construction can vary widely.

Over the past 10 years I’ve had the opportunity to own and use a number of roof top tents. I’ve had the very inexpensive Chinese models to the more expensive South African models. One thing I can tell you is that there is a big difference in quality from low priced to high priced RTT’s and quality is what separates a tent that will last a year from a tent that could last a decade or longer.

Don’t get me wrong, a cheap tent if used very infrequently and in nice weather can give you good service. However, I’ve seen those $1000 models last thru one windstorm before they begin to literally come apart at the seams and their protective covers last less than a year.

So where does the Cascadia Vehicle Tents fit into the spectrum of RTT’s? CVT is a family owned business located in Bend, Oregon and is widely known for their product quality in the world of overlanding.

The tent for this review is the Mount Adams (renamed recently the Mount Denali). This tent is the largest RTT I have ever owned. In it’s deployed form ready for your good nights sleep it measures 87″ wide, 96″ long and 50″ tall. CVT claims it is a 4+ person tent but it can easily fit two adults and three children making it a family sized tent. The tent material is 280g poly/cotton rip stop canvas, the rain fly is 420D polyester oxford and the seams are taped for a water free experience in rainy weather. The base consists of an aluminum frame and joists and a foam insulated aluminum floor. The interior frame is 1″ aluminum tubing. The protective travel cover is a heavy duty UV resistant 600g PVC. It is attached to one side via an aluminum header then zips shut with a YKK zipper around the other three sides for total protection.

Plenty of large windows with zippered storm covers and screening to stop the smallest of insects, the CVT tent will protect you from the harshest of weather and offers plenty of ventilation in fair weather. I can attest to the solid construction of the CVT tent as it weathered two days and nights of wind gusts up to 70mph. Best of all, it comes with a two year warranty!

The Mount Adams (Denali) not only has one door but two doors and two ladders. The advantage here is that people are not having to crawl over one another to enter or exit the tent. The high density 2.5″ foam mattress gives you a comfortable nights sleep, night after night. At 186lbs, it’s going to take a couple of buddies to get it up on your roof rack, to make it easy, there were six of us. Once installed it can be set up or taken down in minutes by one person although it is faster and easier with two.

By now some of you are thinking how much do I have to pay for a tent like this. CVT tents start out just under $1300 for their smaller model to just under $2600 for their top of the line model. While there are many RTT’s you can buy under $1300 do you want to sacrifice quality for price? Simply stated I have not used a better quality tent than the CVT and comparing price to size to features to quality, I don’t think you will find a better buy in a RTT anywhere else.

For a retail price of the model I have of $1995, you also get the top quality changing room/annex with a removable, zip on PVC floor. While I have not used this feature yet because of moving from camp to camp daily, the changing room would be great when set up at the same camp for multiple days. Not only can it be used for privacy but in the event of bad weather can be a shelter all it’s own for cooking and storing gear. It is the best constructed changing room I’ve come across in ten years of roof top tents.

All in all I’ve used the highest priced top name in South African tents and am confident that the CVT tents, priced hundreds less, are every bit as good if not better than the $3000 plus tent from Africa.

CVT stands by it’s product with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied with your CVT tent they will take it back for a replacement or refund within 30 days of purchase. Try that with the competition. To further back up your purchase they give you a 2 year warranty and a trade up option. You can trade your CVT tent or any other RTT to upgrade to a new CVT model at any time.

If you are looking for a top quality tent from a company with a great reputation not only for their quality products but also their great customer service then you need to put Cascadia Vehicle Tents at the top of your list!

Bought the Mt. Denali. And LOVE IT!! Lots of space. Engineering and construction is superb! I was a little worried how it would hold up in a down poor but after experiencing a really hard down poor rain, it hold up with no water inside! I ordered a couple ladder extensions after finding out with my roof rack, the tent was too high up for the standard ladders. Had a little problem with them but it was somewhat solved. Wrote the sales team about it and they wrote right back and explained everything to me. They even sent some cool stuff at no change just to make sure I was happy. Couldnt ask for better customer service or a better tent. It over exceeded my expectations!! If you want a great tent and want a tent that everyone talks about when you camp? This tent is it!! Just be ready to talk to ever camper around you about your tent!! Thanks again CVT!!

Outstanding quality, will last my family years. It is spacious and comfortable. We have had 2 adults, 4 children (8 and younger) in the tent and slept comfortably. I have stayed in sub zero conditions and with all the windows closed this tent stayed plenty warm. Love this tent!
